U-Boat Captain: Twilight, 1943-1945 is a solitaire game that simulates tactical submarine warfare in the Second World War. In the game, the player takes the role of a U-Boat commander, taking his boat on a series of patrols that typically last a month. Each turn of the patrol lasts one day, and you will search for merchant ships to sink, while being wary of escorting warships and allied air attacks. It is Vol. 2 in the U-Boat Captain game series. Each of the seven U-Boat types in the game (Type VIIC, Type VIIC/41, Type IXC, Type IXC/40, Type IXD-2, Type XXI, and Type XXIII) is individually and authentically rated for fuel and torpedoes carried, durability/survivability, deck guns, and crew and captain ratings. The game system is non-complex, emphasizing high playability as well as historicity. All the game rules, components, and tables are in the pages of the book, which must be scanned and printed to play. Of special interest in this edition are the advanced rules covering elektroboote (electroboats) Type XXI and XXIII, long range patrols to the Indian Ocean (especially by the Type IXD-2), eight new Historical Commander cards (with patrol stats and special abilities noted), and rules simulating the changing nature of the U-Boat campaign in the later war years (including diminishing morale as hope for winning the war diminished), when allied tactics and weaponry put the Germans at an increasing disadvantage. There is definitely a different feel than the earlier "Happy Times", with your strategy now by necessity more focused on survival than hunting.During your patrol, you'll sight allied merchants (along, or in a group) that often have warship escorts; you'll need to decide if the circumstances of attacking are worth the risk. There is a fine balance between being aggressive, and overly aggressive, because one false move could be your last. A full patrol (depending on how many enemy encounters you experienced) can be played in 30 minutes, so several patrols can be completed in an evening, which makes the series conducive to repeated play. Importantly, it was specifically designed for solo play.U-Boat Captain: Twilight, 1943-1945 is volume two of Minden’s solitaire World War II tactical/operational submarine game series, covering the final years of the U-Boat campaign, which was different and more dangerous than before. Technology was changing apace on both sides, particually with elektroboote which historically arrived too late in the conflict to make a difference. Hypothetical scenarios are provided to allow gamers to see what might have been had they had arrived earlier. This is a stand alone game, but may be used in conjunction the first volume of the series,U-Boat Captain: 1939-1942, 2nd ed. (Note that the 1st ed. was simply named U-Boat Captain: Advanced Ed.; if you already own that, it is compatible with this Vol. 2 Twilight game as well.) When taken together, the series covers the entire war, with all the major U-Boat types, and the changing and increasingly dangerous nature of the war clearly evident. U-Boat Captain: Twilight, 1943-1945is also volume 12 of Minden’s Battlegame book series, and designed by Gary Graber. Published by Minden Games in 2026. Read more
